Getting the perfect red lip isn’t as difficult to achieve as you might think. Choose the right shade and use the right tools and you’ll get the perfect sexy or romantic red lip that will last all day long. Follow the steps below to get the perfect red lip every time.

Choose the Right Shade

Different skin tones will suit different shades, and although everyone is different, there are a couple of basic rules that you can follow to get the perfect lip colour for you. Generally, you should look to the undertone of your skin – whether your skin is warm or cool – to figure out which colour makeup products you should use. Those with warm skin tones, such as olive skin, medium skin or tawny skin suit orange-reds or warm-reds, while those with cool skin tones such as porcelain or almond tend to suit bluey-reds or cool reds. Work out your skin tone by standing in front of a window. Make a fist and take a look at the veins in your wrist. Are they green? This generally means that you have a warm skin tone. If they’re blue, it tends to mean that you have a cool skin tone, and if they are a mixture of the two, it tends to mean that you have neutral skin. You might find that you suit the opposite color to your skin tone, however, so experiment until you find something that works for you. Generally, the idea is for the red color to pop – so choose something that stands out against your skin.

Prep Your Lips

Color sits better on lips that are moisturized. Before applying lipstick, apply a lip scrub or lip balm and leave it to sink into the lips. Before applying the color, blot the balm off with a tissue.

Line Your Lips

Lining your lips is pretty essential for a full-on pout that lasts all day. Choose a red liner that closely matches your lipstick, then carefully line the edges of the lips, being careful not to go outside of your natural lip line. Color in the lips with the liner. If any of your lipstick wears off during the day, you’ll still have a solid base underneath.

Use a Lip Brush

Brush the top of the lipstick with a lip brush and use the lip brush to apply the color to the lips, particularly if you want a full-on lip. Alternatively, you can use your finger to apply or you can use the lipstick to apply the color.  Brushes are best for contouring, fingers are best for staining and the lipstick itself is best for applying when you’re in a hurry.

Blot Color

Use a square of tissue paper to blot the color away from your lips, then reapply for maximum color and maximum impact. Blotting will also ensure that the lip stick lasts for much longer.

Stop Bleeding

Heavy lip colors can often bleed out around your mouth and stain your teeth, so apply a little concealer around your mouth using a small brush to create a barrier to prevent bleeding, As for your teeth, pop your index finger into your mouth, purse your lips around your finger and slowly pull your finger out. This should pull away any excess lipstick around the inside of your mouth, which should stop your lipstick from staining your teeth.

Above all, have fun with your color. Red lipstick is all about being bold, so play around with your makeup and make a statement with it.
