The watchwords for this year’s beach fashions are asymmetry and plunging necklines.
We love the Grecian elegance of the wrap style in regal purple from Mouille, available in both a one piece and a bikini. The shoulder strap is wide without looking thick or clumsy, and its bold diagonal lines are surprisingly flattering. Also from Mouille is the delightful Chloe frill collection, which makes use of a retro triple frill for a thoroughly modern effect.
Maaji’s 2012 collection is busier in terms of pattern and detailing, with stylishly bohemian prints in shades of purple and turquoise, but similar asymmetric frills.
Sea Sirens are going for high glamour, with a low cut accented by a single feature point such as a gold clasp or diamante spacer. Look out for the Volupte and Ursula one pieces available from Fox and Rose.
The Pistol Panties 2012 collection contrast clean elegant lines with fun prints. The Joss one piece combines a bold, dark animal print with a daring multi-coloured background. The Pamela Bikini is simpler, though no less striking, with gold dots on a black background. However, a personal favourite are is the Olivia. The traditional navy and white stripes are contrasted by a saucy heart spacer at the side of the briefs, but what really stands out is the simply perfect cut, the elegant curves that distinguish truly great design from cheaper imitations.
When you want to cover up without looking frumpy, the silk chiffon maxi dress from Ell and Cee is a seriously glamorous choice. Another plunging neckline edged with divine jewels, this time finishing in soft folds of diaphanous chiffon, making you look and feel like a goddess.
Alternatively, make the most of the mini 70s revival which is adding a touch of contemporary chic to traditional kaftans and ponchos. We particularly like Lotus London’s collection, which incorporate a drawstring under the bust to give you an effortlessly flattering silhouette.
